Can you believe this exceptional and rare little girl was found with her brother Shahdow and sister Joie hovering near an apartment complex dumpster on a chilly October night in 2023 when they were just two months old? With crusted eyes, sniffling noses, and starving bellies, each struggled to survive their unfriendly environment. Thankfully, their rescuers didn’t hesitate to scoop them up and bring them indoors where they’d be safe and fed. Still, because the babies were in such dire condition, their new guardians worried they might not persevere. Later, when they shuttled the kittens to our vet, he diagnosed them with severe upper respiratory infections, a bad case of ringworm, and critical malnourishment. And Moon had an additional issue. Somehow, in her struggle to survive, something had scraped off her lower lip. Thankfully, as her veterinarian said it would, her lip’s skin healed, but it exposed her toothy grin, so she always appears to be smiling.
Now, Moon is a special kind of kitty – a chimera (ky-mare-ah). The chance of a kitty being born a chimera is less than 1%! Internally, chimera cats have two sets of DNA and can often have two blood types. Still, they’re easily recognizable because they have different colored fur on each side of their face, with a nearly straight line separating the two colors – just as Moon does. They get their name from a fantastical fire-breathing beast from Greek mythology that was a mix of a lion, goat, and serpent. So, naturally, Moon is a fierce little fighter with an indomitable will. However, because of her challenging experiences as a baby, she is shy and very cautious around new people and other cats, but her true colors shine once they earn her trust. Shy, however, does not mean demure and quiet. She’s very vocal about her food and won’t hesitate to make her demands known.
Moon, the Chimera, would thrive best in a home with adults and no dogs. She will require a lot of love and patience to help her overcome her initial timidity, but she’ll blossom in the right environment with the perfect people.
